JARROD EN ROUTE TO 5-0 WIN IN GLOVES QUARTERFINALS

FOUR CLUB BOXERS TO FIGHT THURSDAY

Jacob Beyers can become the club's first state champion of the season on Thursday night.  He meets a tough opponent in Dustin Hobson, however, in the 178 subnovice final.  Hobson is a Sarge Johnson boxer who won by RSC two weeks ago (as did Jacob).  J. J. Budde and Jarrod Richeson, both boxing for Evansville, are in the ring against each other in the 152 pound junior open semifinal.  Barry Bernard, a past club boxer with a 6-1 record, will meet Tony Mahune in the 165 pound open semifinal.

The club is guaranteed to have at least three boxers in finals on May 5th -- Mike Durham, James Brown and the winner of the Budde-Richeson match.   So, the next two Thursdays will feature a minimum of 7 club boxers in important bouts.   Come up and support them!

SAMOCKI LOSES EPIC BATTLE BY 3-2 DECISION

In the 2003 Gloves, I saw a cataclysmic fight that I wish I had taped.   Ten minutes after it ended, I saw one of the boxers in the restroom.  He had just finished puking in a john and was badly scuffed and covered in blood.   And that guy was the winner!!

Such was Troy's bout with his highly-touted English opponent, Jimmy Campbell, in the 165 junior open semifinal.   Jimmy is a strong and rangy 6' 3" boxer who RSC'd his first opponent on April 7th.

In what was by FAR the hardest hitting match of the night (and I am including all six open division bouts), Troy won the first round handily, eight-counting Campbell.  The second round saw Campbell come back gamely.   Both fought evenly and tenaciously in the third.  The two boxers shared a brutal 75+ scoring punches during the contest.  Troy offered up numerous blistering counters during the fight, often in multiple scoring combinations, and gave hits that would have knocked out lesser opponents.

Troy had to fight through a serious nosebleed problem that caused a medical time-out midway through round 2.   One punch caused both the nosebleed and a bad cut on the inside of his mouth above his front teeth.  This stoppage and obvious bleeding problem could have subconsciously influenced a judge or two, though it is certainly not supposed to.

Some booing accompanied announcement of the 3-2 decision in favor of Campbell.  A scuffed and very distraught Troy then reported to the medical station and needed more than an hour to bring the nosebleed under control.

Although Troy may have come out on the short end of the judges' voting, there can be no sadness when a man leaves as much of himself in the ring as Troy did.  Speaking personally, I cannot remember a fight in which I have gained as much respect for a boxer as I gained for Troy during this fight.

Locations and times of these bouts will appear here as soon as the information is available.

RICHESON WINS GLOVES OPENER;
HAMMOND AND McCANDLESS LOSE NARROW SPLIT DECISIONS

Jarrod Richeson turned in a magnificent performance in his first-ever Golden Gloves bout, defeating a tough Mike Riley by a unanimous 5-0 decision and evening his record at 1-1.  Jarrod juked and danced with incredible looseness and confidence while snapping crisp jabs and rights throughout his fight.  He now moves on to the 152 junior open semi-finals to meet the winner of J. J. Budde's bout with Jose Guiterez.

Adam McCandless lost a narrow 3-2 decision to Martin Valdez in his 152 junior open bout.   Adam used the same technique that gave him an upset win over Jonathan Soto two weeks ago, jabbing at range and not allowing his stockier opponent to get inside.  The result was a somewhat low punch count that kept the boxers close on the scorecards, but the majority went with Valdez.  Adam's victory over Soto in Lexington, by the way, appears even more impressive now.  Soto knocked out his opponent last night.  It is Soto's second knockout victory in his last three bouts.

JOEY AND ADAM LANDING JABS ON APRIL 7

Joey Hammond suffered the most heartbreaking loss of the evening.  My video replay shows Joey down about 6 punches in round 1 but then even in round 2 and ahead by about 6 punches in round 3.  Joey delivered an energetic and spirited performance in the last round and was clearly in control at the end.  Despite the even count and strong finish, the judges awarded Joey's capable opponent, Shane Crawford, a 4-1 decision.

All three of our guys were solid this opening night and deserve enormous credit for their performances.

The most spectacular moment of the evening was Josh Vires' knockout of William Waits in the 165 pound subnovice division.  Vires caught him with a brutal right, giving Waits a fast trip to the mat and a medical restriction.  This is the same Josh Vires that Jacob Beyers defeated two weeks ago in Lexington!!

INTO THE BREACH

The 2005 Golden Gloves get underway at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 7.   We have three boxers fighting on the first night -- Joey Hammond, Jarrod Richeson and Adam McCandless, all in the 152 pound junior open division.

Weigh-ins and physicals take place between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m.   A 4 p.m. weigh-in gives you a chance to eat 2 or more hours before the earliest bouts.   Plan on a late evening.  The card contains more than 20 bouts.

Please note that Evansville and Indianapolis are now on the SAME TIME.

Easiest directions to Tyndall Armory:    Take Hwy. 41 north to Terre Haute.  Take I-74 east to Indianapolis.   Stay on I-74 until you come to I-65 (just past downtown).   Take I-65 North (Chicago/Ft. Wayne).  About 2 miles after getting on I-65 north, the interstate splits.   Stay left on I-65 to Chicago.   You will go around a curve to the left and come immediately to the  Pennsylvania Street exit ramp.  At the bottom of the ramp, turn left onto Pennsylvania Street.   Tyndall Armory is about 2 blocks ahead on the left -- a boxy-looking 6 story building with a flagpole on top and concrete barriers in front.   There is usually plenty of on-street parking available behind the Armory (to the east).  The parking meters are inoperative after 6 p.m.

FAIN SUFFERS DQ IN JUNIOR GLOVES

Facing a taller and more experienced opponent, Steve Fain was disqualified in a Junior Golden Gloves bout on Thursday night after losing his mouthpiece for a third time.  The DQ came at 1 minute 30 seconds of round one.  There were no knockdowns in the bout, however, and Steve got in some hard rights.   He gained a world of experience by  facing a bigger opponent and boxing in front in front of nearly 1,400 people.  Steve's bout was the final bout on the 24 bout card and took place after 11 p.m.

Asten Tapp was unopposed in his division, so he remained out of state on spring break and was unable to qualify for the walkover win.

After an epic and blood-splattered 3-2 decision between two 17 year old boxers from other clubs, the winner's victory was challenged because saline solution (salt water) was administered to his nose during the fight in order to slow a nosebleed.   Pressure can be applied but substances may not be administered during a fight.  It is not entirely clear if this rule applies to simple salt water.

The Junior Golden Gloves event was an enormous success.  Over 1,400 people attended.

McCANDLESS, BEYERS WIN OPENERS;
RICHESON DEFEATED NARROWLY
ALL SURPRISE EXPERIENCED FOES

Three Evansville boxers had their first bouts in Lexington on Saturday and each of them had a great day against more experienced opponents.

Adam McCandless used superior speed and range to upset a very stout Jonathan Soto in a unanimous three-round decision.  Soto has boxed for at least a year, had two prior bouts and knocked out his last opponent.  We forgot to tell Adam about Soto's knockout victory before the bout!  Adam's speed created constant frustration.  Video replay shows Adam outscoring Soto 21-16.

Jacob Beyers also faced a stockier and more experienced opponent, Josh Vires, a veteran of two prior bouts.  Jacob took one hard shot from Vires in round 1, but used his range masterfully to jab his way to a clear and unanimous decision.  Replay shows Jacob outscoring Vires 14-6.

Jarrod Richeson looked fantastic in his first bout as well.  He hung tough against a very athletic and more experienced opponent, Edgar Valdez, who outscored Jarrod very narrowly on points.  Valdez may have been one of the most aggressive boxers at the event, but Jarrod was unphased by the pressure and threw a club-high total of 142 punches during his bout.

It was a great first outing for all of our guys and no one even came close to taking an eight-count.  All three are looking forward to their second bouts at the Golden Gloves starting in 10 days.

Mike Durham, Joey Hammond and J. J. Budde were also in Lexington.  MIke could not be matched and Joey and J. J.  stepped aside to let Adam and Jarrod get a fight before the Gloves.

The guys really appreciate your fantastic support at the event.  Over 30 team members, coaches, family members and friends made the trip to Lexington!!

BUDDE, BEYERS AND KAUFFMAN IN THE RING THURSDAY

J.J. Budde will make his Golden Gloves debut this Thursday in the quarterfinals of the 152 junior open division.  He will face Jose Guitarez of the Sherman Depew Boxing Club.  A victory would place J. J. in the semifinals against teammate, Jarrod Richeson.

Jacob Beyers will also appear in his first-ever Golden Gloves bout on Thursday.  He will fight Jarred Cotterman of the Broadripple Boxing Club (Indy) in the semifinals of the 178 pound subnovice division.   Two weeks ago, Jacob had his first fight and defeated a tough Josh Vires, winner by knockout in his opening Gloves bout last week.

Chad Kauffman of Louisville is affiliated with our club.  Chad will be appearing in the semifinals of the 135 pound junior open division.  His opponent is Steve Motton of the Anderson Boxing Club.

NINE PREPARE FOR GLOVES

Nine E.B.C. members have requested applications to box in the 2005 Golden Gloves beginning on April 7th.  Preparations have included four regular club practices per week, Sunday afternoon visits to Tony Curtis' gym, road work, and workouts at private venues such as Bob's Gym, Resultz Gym and Joey's rec room.

At least eight of our local members will box at the Gloves.  They include Mike Durham, Joey Hammond, James Brown, Troy Samocki,  J. J. Budde, Adam McCandless, Jason Boyle and Jacob Beyers.  (If anyone else has decided to box in the Gloves, please send me a note on the "contact us" page.)

Our ninth boxer will be Chad Kauffman, a previously unattached boxer who lives in Louisville.  Chad boxes in the 132 pound junior open division and was Mike Durham's opponent at the Sarge Johnson Center in Indianapolis in January.  Glad to have you aboard, Chad!

REF'S PANIC COSTS DANNY

In a nationally-televised bout in Atlanta on February 11, 2005, Danny Maldonado (16-1) suffered his first pro loss at the hands of former world-title challenger, Jesus Perez (24-9-2).  The referee inexplicably stopped the contest at 1:30 of round 1 when Perez shoved Danny with a shoulder while tripping Danny with his right leg -- a clear foul that caused Danny to stumble.   Earlier in the round, Danny had twice gone to one knee because of a minor knockdown and later a stumble.  Danny, who was unfazed and clearly able to continue after the fight stoppage, stood in disbelief as the audience booed the decision.  ESPN's color commentators for the bout, undefeated world champion, Lucia Rijker ("Million Dollar Baby"), and USA Boxing's Director of Coaches, Manuel Steward, agreed that the decision to stop the fight was "wrong" and probably the result of panic on the part of an inexperienced pro referee.

THREE MEMBERS FIGHT IN SARGE JOHNSON SHOW

The club took three boxers to the Sarge Johnson show in Indianapolis.

Mike Durham won 3-0 vs. Chad Kaufman.  Mike gave up some weight again but looked great in this three-rounder.  He came out of the corner with some vicious salvos on several occasions.

Nick Johnson lost 0-3 to Shawn Kendall.  Nick and Shawn went toe-to-toe in this slugfest.   Neither would back up one inch and both took a lot of hard hits to the head.

J. J. Budde lost 1-2 to Recardo Martinez.  Once gain, J. J. was up against a more experienced fighter (5-3 record).  An off-duty ref said he thought J. J. won this one, and he did win one judge.   This was J.J.'s best fight and close.

Special Award.  During an intermission at the Sarge Johnson show, the event hosts presented Dick and Jeaneene Hildebrandt with a special award, a beautiful engraved plaque with clock in appreciation for their long-term service to amateur boxing.  Congratulations Dick and Jeaneene.  There are not enough awards possible for wonderful people like you!
